About Pelvic Floor Therapy
Includes Prenatal and Post Partum Care
Pelvic health physiotherapy is recognized as the first choice of treatment for issues such as incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, and pelvic pain. Trained pelvic floor physiotherapists perform both external (posture, breathing, low back, hips, and abdomen) and internal (vaginal, rectal) examinations to assess for pelvic floor dysfunction. An internal exam is not required, however it provides a whole picture of the system and is highly recommended. Based on the assessment, customized treatment may consist of pelvic floor muscle retraining, education, bladder/bowel routine tracking, dry needling, and hands-on techniques. These various modes of pelvic floor treatment are well supported by the scientific literature and can be effective as part of your care.
1 in 3 women and 1 in 9 men experience stress urinary incontinence. This can further lead to decreased self esteem, inactivity, increased falls risk, and impaired activities of daily living. Pelvic physio can help! An individualized program can address pelvic floor dysfunction by optimizing the mobility and function of the pelvic floor muscles and related structures.
Prenatal and Postpartum Recovery
Pregnancy and the journey to motherhood is an extremely exciting time. We have specialized practitioners with training in pelvic floor health to support you every step of the way! Prenatal care can help you deal with those aches and pains that come up during different phases of pregnancy, help you prepare for labour and childbirth and keep your body moving as you embrace the changes your body is going through in creating new life. Clinical pilates is also an effective, safe adjunct to pre natal care. Post partum care is an integral part of recovery. Pregnancy and childbirth cause changes in the body, where the muscles, joints and ligaments are affected including the pelvic floor. Our trained pelvic health physiotherapists can help to empower patients with their recovery through education, exercise and manual therapy to regain function post delivery. We have an understanding, gentle and compassionate approach, as our therapists are mamas themselves!
