About IMS/ Dry Needling

IMS (Intramuscular Stimulation) involved the insertion of a thin filament needle into a band of tight tissue stimulating a contraction or twitching of muscles. IMS can help to ‘reset’ tissue to its natural resting length, relieve pain associated with trigger points, improve flexibility and reduce compression on associated joints. It is used to address movement dysfunction and is also indicated in the treatment of neuropathic pain. IMS is used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan, and is almost always paired with a corrective exercise program and other forms of manual therapy to create sustainable results. Prior to IMS, your therapist will discuss the risks and benefits of using this treatment. You and your Physiotherapist can discuss if IMS is the right intervention for you.

IMS treatment is not recommended more than once per week. A common symptom following IMS treatment is soreness and stiffness for up to 48 hours. This typically resolves following the initial 48 hours, and the benefits of increased mobility are felt and the exercise program can commence.
